My Global Footprint

Ok. First off…this is not an original idea. A friend of mine has done something similar (not online though).

What is it? Had some spare time and was playing around with Google Maps when this idea struck me…I used Google maps to create a custom map. I have used push pins to show the places across the world that I have been to. Right now those pins are few and far in between…but, hopefully in a few years, I hope to light up the entire map!

ya this in deed a nice feature in Google map.

I was trying to extend that to a bit higher level. My idea was, before traveling lets put the expected nodal points where i may visit and I should have a GPS enabled device/phone which automatically updates the tag in the Google Map after reaching (or coming near to the lat-long point).

Given Google map API technically its possible though 🙂

This is indeed a nice feature in Google map.
I was trying to extend that to some other level. My idea was before traveling I will put some “possible nodal points” by specifying the lat-long of the place and I should carry a GPS enabled device/phone, when I will reach to the place (or somewhere near that…that we can define a algorithm) the device should automatically puts the pin the Google Map also for not decided place after reaching there and after getting the lat-long of the place with one click I should be able to put a pin. With Google Map API and the devices like iPhone technically it is quite possible.

@Shamik: That sounds like a good idea…though I don’t know how practical it is. If what you say is true, then Google Maps will automatically update where ever I go as long as I carry a GPS enabled device. That will be really convenient…but, then what about privacy issues? Would I like to automate this and show the world where I am? hmmmm…I don’t think so!
